Book review: Stolen Tongues

Stolen tongues by Felix Blackwell

Fast paced and interesting, I did enjoy reading this. I will say the dialogue and backstory parts were pretty heavy handed and cliche, but it’s horror, I don’t have high expectations. Mostly I want scares and tension, and this delivered. I had the urge to finish it in a single sitting.

Why does every FMC in horror/thrillers have a past history of sleepwalking? There are so many plot holes. Why wouldnt Felix look in the bathroom before rushing OUTSIDE? Why would Fayes parents let her go up there alone with a man when they knew all these things?

The thing with the parents could have easily been manvoured by Faye maybe stealing the keys and wanting to go to the cabin, but the author seemed to prefer her to be ‘perfect’ aka boring. She needed so much work to be more interesting.

It was fine. Its a horror book which is my genre that I care less about finer details, but this had pretty poor exposition and clunkily spilled out details that should have had more impact. Everything felt very grey, rather than black and white parts. Muddled.

It’s rushed in parts that need to breath and dragged out in parts that need to be quick. Originally this was a short story, and I can tell that it’s been stretched out.

Overall I still liked it, but man, it could’ve been so much better. Mostly just disappointed since the other reddit no sleep story (Penpal – Dathan Auerbach) was one of my favorite books ever and executed so well.

The end didn’t even do much. It wasn’t that scary either.
