I finally finished it!
I am intrigued and very engaged while reading this, but when I put it down, it’s also easy to not pick up.
I like the twisted character dynamics, but sometimes they just talk and talk and it’s so long
and I just get bored. Mostly this is Henry.
The characters are certainly the strongest part, I just wished it had more drama or something in the first half to keep me more engaged.
The second half, after the death, was a lot more interesting, surprisingly, that’s when the dynamics were tested and I finally felt the stakes. This second half I consumed in less than two weeks (I started in October and finished in February).
I wish I could say it’s a 5 star read, but I also found Richard’s POV irritating sometimes, mostly when he would reference current things instead does trying in the past, it pulled me out of the story.
I did really loved this overall and can see why it’s some people’s favorite book, I do foresee myself rereading this, but I feel it’s a hard book to recommend with how bored I was in the beginning. It’s one of those books that, on reflection, sticks with you and you want more from. But to start with it’s a bit dry.
